UPSC Aspirants Get Two Additional Attempts to Crack Civil Service Exams

It was indeed a welcome step on the onset of one of the most prestigious entrance examinations in India – the UPSC Civil Service Examination for 2014. With the recent announcement from the Ministry of Personnel, now each candidate can appear the UPSC Civil Service Examination for two more times, even if he/ she has already accomplished the maximum permissible attempt of 4 time (for Unreserved category).

UPSC Civil Service Examination 2014:

The UPSC Civil Service examination is one of the most coveted examinations of its kind in the country and in the entire world, designed to select the elite core from the hoard of aspirants to join the top brass of Indian Civil Service such as IAS (Indian Administrative Service), IPS (Indian Police Service), IFS (Indian Foreign Service), IRS (Indian Revenue Service) among many others. To appear this examination a candidate need to complete his Graduation in specific disciplines and should have attained minimum 21 years of age. The maximum age ceiling for appearing this examination was 30 years till the UPSC Civil Service Examination 2013. On these conditions, the candidates appearing this prestigious examination were able to attempt this examination maximum for 4 times as per the structural guidelines.

For information, this examination selects candidates through 3 main stages, viz: Prelims, Main Examination and Personal Interview.

The Change with effect from UPSC Civil Service Examination 2014:

Prior to 2014 Civil Service Examination, any candidate belonging to unreserved category was able to attempt for a maximum of 4 (four) times for this examination. This was up to 7 (seven) times for OBC (Other Backward Class) community of candidates and there were no restrictions for the number of attempts for SC & ST category of candidates. With this, the ceiling of maximum age for appearing this examination was 30 years.

With the recent amendment of this examination structure, now the maximum age limit has been extended to 32 years for General (unreserved) category of candidates. And with this the most important change has been made by allowing candidates to appear this examination for 2 more times (apart from the original 4 times). Now any unreserved category of candidate can appear this examination for 6 times in total or till 32 years, whichever is earlier.

Who will be benefited:

This dramatic change is being welcomed among the mass of aspirants. This order from the Ministry of Personnel will help all those candidates, who have:

  1. Appeared for 4 attempts but not achieved 30 years till now.
  2. Reached 30 years before attempting even for 4 time (now they can appear up to 6 times or till the age of 32, without appropriate relaxation per category).
  3. OBC and SC, ST candidates who have reached their relaxed maximum age limit.

Virtually every UPSC Civil Service aspirant who just missed a chance to appear this examination can be benefited from this government order.

For the year 2014, the Civil Service Preliminary Examination is scheduled to be held tentatively on 24th of August. This order at the right juncture of time, when people are applying for this examination can help at least a millions of aspirants, who were just missing another chance due to constriction of age and number of attempts.

Many people see it as a gift from the Congress-led Government to the youth just before the onset of Parliamentary Elections in May 2014. But, in any case this has offered a strong wave of positivity through every youth and talented, who can now appear this prestigious examination for two more times with effect from UPSC Civil Service Examination 2014.
